The complex world of Lyme disease and PANS/PANDAS

In this episode, our very own Bioenergetic Practitioner Cristina McMullen shares her two decades of experience helping children and adults heal from tick-borne infections through holistic, individualized care.

Together, show host Ann Desjardins and Cristina dive into the complex world of Lyme disease and PANS/PANDAS. They discuss the importance of building immune resilience in children, emphasizing that despite potential exposure to pathogens like Lyme disease, children can be protected and empowered to lead healthy lives. You’ll hear success stories of patients who recover from chronic health conditions and thrive academically. Cristina also stresses the need for education and preparation rather than fear, encouraging outdoor activities while teaching practical measures to handle potential infections.

This is an important episode as children are the hardest hit population when it comes to Lyme and tick-borne illness, and they experience a litany of symptoms related to their cognitive abilities which could derail their academic life, as well as their physical health permanently if left undiagnosed and untreated. PANS/PANDAS is something that often accompanies tick-borne illness so being informed and aware is crucial.

Tune in to hear how families can replace fear with empowerment, helping kids stay healthy, active, and thriving both physically and mentally.

Electrodermal Screening, Brain Mapping & the Bioenergetic Approach

We’re thrilled to share a powerful podcast episode featuring our very own Anna Powers, Bioenergetic Practitioner at Longevity Health Center, on a recent episode of Bioenergetics Beat.

In this heartfelt conversation, Host Heather Gray sat down with Anna Powers, a practitioner with three decades in the bioenergetic space, to unpack how electrodermal screening (EDS), brain mapping (qEEG), and neurofeedback can help practitioners and clients see patterns behind stress, sleep, attention, and overall resilience. Anna shares her own health journey, how early ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) can shape lifelong physiology, and why listening to a client’s story matters as much as any device reading. You’ll hear how EDS compares with tools like ZYTO and why some clinics pair energetic assessments with conventional labs for a more complete picture.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Electrodermal Screening 101: What EDS is, how microcurrent readings at acupuncture points may reflect energetic stress in organ systems, and common categories practitioners explore (e.g., metals, molds, viruses).
  • Brain Mapping vs. SPECT: How qEEG brain maps (brain waves) differ from SPECT (blood flow) and why some teams view them as complementary perspectives.
  • From Story to Strategy: How life events, especially ACE scores, chronic stress, or major transitions, can correlate with immune and adrenal patterns, and why compassionate listening guides better protocols.
  • Energetic Findings & Labs: Ways practitioners use energetic assessments alongside conventional testing to refine next steps and focus resources.
  • Remote Assessments (Discussed Conceptually): How some clinics handle distance clients (e.g., mailed samples) and why follow-up rhythm matters in long-term support.
  • Case Insights & Practical Pearls: Patterns Anna often sees around adrenals, gluten sensitivity (as part of her personal journey), and detox support strategies discussed in a non-prescriptive, educational way.

Tune in to discover how electrodermal screening and brain mapping can uncover hidden stress patterns, guide personalized wellness strategies, and help you better understand the mind-body connection behind lasting health and resilience.

The holiday season can be a time of joy, connection, and celebration, but let’s be honest: it can also be stressful. Packed schedules, endless to-do lists, family dynamics, financial strain, and the pressure to make everything “perfect” often leave us feeling stretched too thin. When stress builds up, your nervous system takes the hit, and that imbalance can ripple out to your body, mind, and spirit.

Signs Your Nervous System May Be Out of Balance

If you notice any of these signs, it could mean your nervous system is struggling to keep up:

  • Anxiety, irritability, or overwhelm
  • Brain fog or trouble focusing
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Feeling “tired but wired”
  • Digestive problems or food sensitivities
  • Chronic muscle tension or pain
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Frequent illness or slow recovery

When your nervous system is stressed, it shifts into fight-or-flight mode, draining energy reserves and making it harder to heal, focus, and feel at peace. Over time, this stress can disrupt digestion, weaken immunity, create hormonal imbalances, and even impact your mood and memory. The good news is, there are practical, gentle ways to restore balance and calm during this busy season.

Tips for Calming Your Nervous System

Daily Gentle Movement
Incorporating light exercise such as walking outdoors, yoga, or time on an elliptical or stationery bike can work wonders. These activities should feel nourishing instead of depleting. You should walk away feeling refreshed, not exhausted. Pairing movement with deep, diaphragmatic breathing signals safety to your nervous system and helps reset your stress response.

Grounding
Opt outside as much as you can. Spending a few minutes barefoot on grass, soil, or sand is more than relaxing. It connects you with the earth’s natural electrical energy, which can improve your circadian rhythms, improving daytime energy and night time sleep. It can also reduce inflammation, and help you feel more centered and calm.

Mindfulness Practices
Simple daily rituals such as prayer, meditation, journaling, and practicing gratitude can shift your focus from stressors to what truly matters. This is where that deep, diaphragmatic breathing can come back into play! These practices cultivate peace of mind and help your body downshift out of fight-or-flight mode.

Bioenergetic Testing
At Longevity Health Center, our Bioenergetic Evaluation service helps us create a customized protocol tailored to your unique needs. By identifying underlying imbalances, we can recommend homeopathic remedies, nutritional support, and therapies designed to restore nervous system balance and support your body’s natural healing ability.

Restorative Therapies

  • Acupuncture can calm the nervous system, balance energy flow, and reduce pain and anxiety.
  • Assisted Lymphatic Therapy gently stimulates lymph flow, supporting detoxification and immune function.
  • Massage Therapy helps relieve chronic tension, improves circulation, and gives the body and mind a reset.
  • HOCATT floods the body and it’s cells with oxygen, boosting immunity, energy, and mood.

Real-life Connection
The holidays are all about connecting with the people we love most. Spending quality time with family and friends can help buffer stress, release feel-good hormones, and remind you that you are not alone. Deep, life-giving relationships support both emotional and physical health.

Focus on the True Meaning of the Holidays
When we let go of the need to attend every event, buy all the gifts, and make everything perfect, we free ourselves to experience more joy. Focusing on gratitude, faith, connection, and meaning makes the season far more peaceful and fulfilling than any material item or party.

Adaptogenic Herbs
Adaptogens are natural substances that help the body adapt to stress, balance energy, and support resilience. Herbs such as ashwagandha, rhodiola, and holy basil can help stabilize mood, support adrenal function, and improve overall vitality. Incorporating adaptogens into your wellness routine can give your nervous system an extra layer of support during demanding seasons.

It is our mission to help you be well in mind, body, and spirit.

It would be our privilege to partner with you in creating a holiday season filled with wellness, meaning, and calm.

At Longevity Health Center, we are always looking for natural, time-tested ways to support the body’s innate ability to heal. One simple yet powerful tool we often recommend is the castor oil pack. Used for centuries in many traditional healing systems, castor oil packs can offer profound benefits for detoxification, immune support, and overall wellness.

What Are Castor Oil Packs?

A castor oil pack involves applying warm castor oil to the abdomen (often with a flannel cloth) and allowing it to soak into the skin for 30–60 minutes. Many people apply a heating pad over the area for enhanced activation and absorption. During this time, the oil penetrates deeply, stimulating circulation, lymphatic drainage, and detoxification processes. Many individuals find this practice deeply relaxing and an easy way to unwind at night.

The Health Benefits of Castor Oil Packs

Supports Detoxification
Castor oil packs help stimulate the liver and lymphatic system, encouraging the body’s natural detox pathways. This makes them an excellent addition to a wellness routine focused on reducing toxic load and improving overall vitality.

Enhances Digestive Health
Many patients notice improvements in digestion and elimination when using castor oil packs regularly. They can help soothe inflammation in the gut, support bowel regularity, and reduce bloating or abdominal discomfort.

Strengthens the Immune System
By improving lymphatic circulation, castor oil packs support the removal of waste products and help white blood cells function more effectively. This gentle stimulation of the immune system makes the body more resilient to illness.

Reduces Stress and Promotes Restful Sleep
Incorporating a castor oil pack into your nightly routine encourages relaxation, helps calm the nervous system, and sets the stage for deeper, more restorative sleep.

Eases Pain and Inflammation
Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, a compound with natural anti-inflammatory properties. Patients often use packs to help relieve joint pain, menstrual discomfort, or muscle soreness.

Why Make Castor Oil Packs Part of Your Nightly Routine?

Your body performs much of its repair and detox work at night. By applying a castor oil pack before bed, you give your system extra support exactly when it needs it most. Over time, this consistent practice can help:

  • Balance hormones
  • Improve energy and clarity
  • Support liver function
  • Promote a healthier inflammatory response

Best of all, castor oil packs are safe, affordable, and easy to do at home. With just a small investment of time each evening, you can enjoy lasting benefits for your health and well-being.

Getting Started

At Longevity Health Center, we guide patients on safe and effective ways to incorporate castor oil packs into their routines, often as part of a broader detoxification and healing protocol. We carry a 100% pure organic castor oil product, as well as the 100% cotton flannel pad needed to make the pack in our walk-in Nutrition Shop.

If you’d like to learn more about how this simple ritual could support your wellness journey, ask your practitioner or another Longevity staff member at your next visit.

As we move into the last few months of the year, life often seems to speed up. Between work deadlines, school schedules, holiday planning, and a calendar full of events, many people push their bodies and minds to the limit. This extra strain can take a toll on the adrenal glands, the small but mighty organs responsible for producing hormones that help regulate stress, energy, blood pressure, and metabolism.

In holistic medicine, there is a term often used for this state of overwork and exhaustion: adrenal fatigue. While it is not an official medical diagnosis, it describes a pattern of symptoms linked to long-term stress and depleted adrenal function. If you are feeling “off” as the busy season approaches, or like you’re living in “fight or flight” mode, your adrenals may be trying to tell you something.

1. Persistent Fatigue

If you feel exhausted even after a full night’s sleep, or you experience a sharp drop in energy mid-afternoon, your adrenal glands could be struggling to keep up with your body’s demands. You shouldn’t need to load up on caffeine and sugar just to survive the afternoon! Chronic fatigue that does not improve with rest is a hallmark sign of adrenal exhaustion.

2. Difficulty Handling Stress

You may notice that things which once felt manageable now leave you feeling overwhelmed, irritable, or anxious. Healthy adrenal glands help you adapt to stress, but when they are overtaxed, resilience is harder to maintain.

3. Sleep Problems

Adrenal imbalance can disrupt your natural cortisol rhythm, making it hard to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake feeling rested. Some people experience the “tired but wired” sensation where the body is exhausted but the mind is still racing at bedtime. In other words, you feel up when you should be down, and down when you should feel up!

4. Cravings for Salt or Sugar

The adrenal glands influence sodium and blood sugar balance. When they are depleted, you may find yourself reaching for salty snacks or sweet treats more often. These cravings are your body’s way of trying to restore energy and mineral balance.

5. Brain Fog and Poor Focus

If your thinking feels cloudy, or you struggle to focus and remember details, it may be a sign your body is prioritizing survival over cognitive sharpness. Stress hormones can directly impact brain function when they are out of balance.

Supporting Your Adrenals During the Busy Season

If these signs sound familiar, it is important not to ignore them. The holiday season can be joyful, but it can also add layers of stress that push already tired adrenals even harder. Left unaddressed, adrenal imbalance can impact immune function, hormone health, digestion, and mood.

At Longevity Health Center, we offer holistic therapies and high-quality supplements designed to help restore adrenal function, balance hormones, and improve resilience to stress. From acupuncture and nutritional counseling to targeted adaptogenic herbal support, our team is here to guide you back to feeling like yourself.

This fall, give your adrenals the care they need. Schedule your visit to Longevity Health Center and enter the holiday season with more energy, balance, and peace of mind.

By Cristina McMullen, Certified Traditional Naturopath, Longevity Health Center

Summer is full of sunshine, ball games, pool days, and road trips,  but it can also bring bee stings, belly aches, scraped knees, and mystery rashes just when you least expect them. As a naturopath and a mom of four very active kids, I’ve learned that a little preparation goes a long way when it comes to keeping your family healthy and calm through it all. Having a well-stocked holistic first aid kit can make a huge difference when you’re out and about, and building in simple daily supports helps prevent most of those issues before they even begin.

This guide offers both: the remedies I don’t leave home without, and the daily wellness tools I use to keep my own family thriving all summer long. Because truly, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” And when you’re juggling kids, sports, travel, and sunshine, a little planning now saves a lot of stress later.

The Holistic First Aid Kit

This super simple kit contains most of the remedies I bring with me to the park, pool, ballfield, on hikes, or on road trips. With just a few key additions, you’ll be ready for just about anything summer throws your way,  from bug bites and belly aches to bruises and burns.

It isn’t about packing a whole pharmacy for every possible ailment. It’s about being prepared for the most common things you’ll encounter on your summer adventures. It’s peace of mind in a pouch.

Homeopathics

  • Apis 30c – For bee stings, bug bites, or allergic skin reactions with swelling and heat.
Dose: 2 pellets every 15–30 minutes for up to 3 doses, then as needed.
  • Ledum 30c – First-line for tick bites, puncture wounds, or cold, bruised-feeling bites.
Dose: 2 pellets after a bite or sting, repeat every few hours if needed.
  • Rhus tox 30c – Helps with poison ivy, itchy rashes, or joint stiffness worsened by rest.
Dose: 2 pellets 2–3 times per day until symptoms improve.
  • Arsenicum album 30c – For vomiting, diarrhea, or food poisoning with restlessness.
Dose: 2 pellets every 30–60 minutes for acute symptoms, space out as they  improve.

Topicals

  • No Bites Bug Spray – A clean, DEET-free insect repellent made with essential oils.
Spray on exposed skin and reapply every couple hours or after swimming or    sweating.
  • Calendula salve – Natural antiseptic that speeds healing for cuts, scrapes, mild rahes, and even sunburn.
Apply topically 2–3 times a day on clean skin.
  • Arnica salve – Eases bruising, bumps, and sore muscles. (Not for open wounds.)
Rub gently into the affected area as needed.
  • Argentyn 23 gel – Broad-spectrum antimicrobial that helps prevent infection in cuts, bites, or  burns.
Apply a thin layer to the affected area 1–3 times daily.
  • Sting Stop Gel – Fast relief for itching and irritation from bug bites or stings.
Apply directly to the irritated area as needed.

At Home Add-Ons to Complete It All

  • Band-aids (assorted sizes) – Always useful for cuts, blisters, or minor scrapes.
  • Gauze pads + medical tape – For larger wounds or when a regular bandage won’t do.
  • Tweezers or Tick Remover Tool – For splinters, thorns, or safe tick removal.
  • Small scissors – Handy for cutting tape, gauze, or clothing in a pinch.
  • Natural, mineral-based sunscreen – For safe sun protection without harsh chemicals.
  • Alcohol/vinegar ear drops (50/50 blend) – Use after lake or pool swimming to help prevent swimmer’s ear.
A couple drops per ear after swimming can dry out moisture and discourage infection.

Simple Daily Supports

Now you have your first aid kit for the “just in case” moments. But what about the daily rhythm that helps avoid those moments in the first place? In my house, we keep a few core supplements in rotation year-round, our wellness “security blankets” that help fill in dietary gaps and support growing, active bodies. Then, as the seasons shift, we layer in a few smart additions to help our systems adjust to our environment.

Daily Core Summer Supplements

  • High-quality probiotic – For gut health, digestion, and immune support.
  • Omega-3s – Supports brain health, focus, inflammation, and mood.
  • Multivitamin – Helps bridge nutritional gaps and supports energy and development.

Smart Summer Add-Ons

These give an extra layer of support for the most common seasonal stressors:

  • Glutathione or NAC – For detoxification and antioxidant protection. A must for kids exposed to chlorine, mold, or pesticides/herbicides (like glyphosate on ball fields or public parks).
  • Milk Thistle or Liver Support Blends – Gentle support for the liver, especially helpful during a summer of pool chemicals, moldy air, and other environmental chemicals.
  • Quercetin Seasonal Shield or D-Hist Jr. – Natural histamine support for seasonal allergies triggered by grasses, trees, ragweed, and mold.
  • Astaxanthin (around 7mg daily) – A powerful antioxidant often called “internal sunscreen”  that protects skin from UV damage from the inside out.

Everyday Summer Wellness Hacks

Prevention isn’t just about supplements. Sometimes the simple, daily things make the biggest difference. These habits help support the body’s natural ability to detox, heal, and stay balanced, especially when summer gets hot, busy, and full of exposures.

  • Rinse Off After Swimming
Especially important after chlorinated pools or natural water sources. A quick shower helps wash off residues, bacteria, or algae that can irritate skin or ears.
  • Detox Baths After Pool or Lake Days
Chlorine, lake water, sunscreen, and bug spray all build up. A warm detox bath helps the body reset. This is  great for calming the nervous system, easing muscle tension, and supporting lymph flow.
Try: 1 cup Epsom salt + ½ cup baking soda and soak for 20–30 minutes.
  • Hydrate with Electrolytes
Don’t just chug water, balance it with electrolytes. Clean, dye-free electrolyte powders or coconut water help keep kids hydrated, focused, and headache-free.
  • Rotate Wet Clothes & Shoes
Swampy socks and damp swimsuits create the perfect breeding ground for rashes or fungal issues. Get kids into fresh clothes when you can.
  • Regular Tick Checks
Do quick evening tick checks, especially after wooded play, hikes, or ball fields. Then, if you happen to find a tick, stay calm and pull out your first aid kit.
  • Cool, Clean Snacks
Pack whole food snacks like fruit, cucumbers, clean protein bars, or nut butter packets to avoid sugar crashes and food dye overload.
  • Prioritize Sleep (Even When It’s Still Light Out)
Longer days and later nights can throw off circadian rhythms. Try to maintain a calming bedtime routine, limit screens after sunset, and use blackout curtains if needed.
Tip: Magnesium, L-theanine, or calming herbs like chamomile can support winding down when excitement is high.

You don’t have to do everything perfectly to raise resilient, thriving kids, especially in the chaos and joy of summer. Just a little intention, a few smart tools, and a rhythm of prevention can make a huge difference.

When you think about staying healthy, your mind might go straight to your immune system, gut health, or even your sleep. But there’s another crucial system quietly working behind the scenes to keep you well: your lymphatic system. Often overlooked, this network plays a vital role in detoxification, immune function, and healing, especially when supported through lymphatic drainage therapies.

At Longevity Health Center, we believe in equipping the body to heal itself by addressing the root causes of illness. Supporting your lymphatic system is a simple but powerful way to jumpstart your detox journey and feel more energized, clear-headed, and resilient.

What is the Lymphatic System?

Think of the lymphatic system as your body’s internal drainage system. It’s a complex network of vessels, nodes, and organs that helps clear out waste, toxins, and pathogens. It also plays a key role in circulating immune cells and absorbing fats and nutrients from the digestive tract.

Unlike your circulatory system, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a central pump like the heart. Instead, it relies on movement, hydration, and proper care to function efficiently. When lymph flow becomes stagnant, toxins can build up, inflammation can increase, and your body’s natural healing abilities are compromised.

Why Lymphatic Health Matters

Immunity Boost

Your lymph nodes are home to infection-fighting white blood cells. When your lymphatic system is flowing smoothly, your immune cells are better able to detect and destroy invaders like viruses, bacteria, and abnormal cells.

Detoxification

The lymphatic system is one of the body’s main detox pathways, moving waste products from cells to be eliminated through the liver, kidneys, and skin. If your lymph becomes sluggish, detox slows down and symptoms like fatigue, skin issues, and brain fog can set in.

Healing and Recovery

After injury or illness, your lymphatic system is crucial in reducing swelling, clearing damaged tissue, and bringing healing nutrients to affected areas. Supporting lymph flow can speed up recovery and reduce inflammation.

Lifestyle Habits That Promote Lymphatic Drainage

You don’t have to wait until you’re sick to support your lymphatic system. These simple, daily habits can help keep things flowing and keep you feeling your best:

Hydration

Lymph is composed mainly of water, so staying well-hydrated is essential for proper circulation. Aim to drink at least half your body weight in ounces each day. Add a pinch of sea salt or a squeeze of lemon for added mineral support.

Foods That Support Lymphatic Drainage

Nutrition plays a major role in lymphatic health. Incorporate the following foods into your meals to support natural drainage:

  • Leafy greens like kale, spinach, and arugula help cleanse the blood and lymph.
  • Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory that supports detox pathways.
  • Citrus fruits promote hydration and contain bioflavonoids that strengthen lymph vessels.
  • Garlic supports immune function and circulation.
  • Chia seeds are high in omega-3s and fiber, promoting gentle detoxification.
  • Avocados are rich in healthy fats, potassium, and antioxidants that support cellular health and detoxification.
  • Nuts, especially almonds and walnuts, provide essential fatty acids and vitamin E, helping reduce inflammation and support overall lymphatic function.

Daily Movement

Since your lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump, movement is key to pushing lymph through its vessels. Low-impact, rhythmic activities like walking, elliptical, swimming, and rebounding (mini trampoline) help circulate lymph and reduce stagnation. Try to do some gentle yoga or stretching every day.

Dry Brushing

Before you shower, use a natural-bristle brush to sweep your skin in long strokes toward your heart. This helps stimulate lymph flow and exfoliates the skin, one of your body’s detox organs.

Try the Big 6

Renowned lymphatic therapist Kelly Kennedy recommends a daily routine called “The Big 6”—six easy self-massage points that take just minutes to perform and promote full-body lymphatic movement. This is a quick and easy practice, and it’s especially beneficial when conducted right before a sauna session.  Watch the Big 6 here.

Sauna

Sauna therapy promotes lymphatic drainage by increasing circulation, stimulating sweat, and encouraging the release of toxins through the skin—one of the body’s primary elimination organs. The heat also helps relax muscles and dilate lymphatic vessels, allowing lymph to flow more freely and efficiently. Regular sauna use can support overall detoxification and immune resilience.

Natural Remedies to Support Drainage

At Longevity’s walk-in Nutrition Shop, our expert staff can help you find natural remedies that promote healthy lymphatic function. These may include:

  • Homeopathic lymph drainage remedies that stimulate the lymph nodes and organs of elimination.
  • Herbs like echinacea, dandelion, and burdock root, which gently cleanse and support immune response.
  • Binders to help trap and eliminate toxins that may otherwise recirculate.

When used under guidance, these remedies can enhance your results and ensure that your detox pathways are open and functioning well.

Experience the Benefits of Assisted-Lymphatic Therapy

If you feel like you’re doing all the right things but still aren’t seeing results, your body may need an extra push. Assisted-Lymphatic Therapy (ALT) is a cutting-edge, non-invasive service we offer at Longevity Health Center that uses low-energy vibrational technology to break up congestion and stimulate lymph flow.

Using a handheld device with light, sound, and electrostatic energy, our practitioners can target areas of stagnation and support your body’s natural detox processes. Clients often report improved energy, reduced swelling, clearer skin, and faster recovery from illness or injury.
