Falling for Clean!

Moving indoors again reminds us how important cleanliness is for our health and well-being.
The well known Dr Sanjay Gupta appeared on TV last week discussing the importance of personal hygiene. This is a theme we have emphasized for years as being a foundation for longevity and stamina.
Dr Gupta emphasized how important it is to take TIME washing our hands. He recommended taking 30-40 seconds, digging fingernails deep into the soap, liquid, paste or bar, vigorously lathering and rubbing our fingers together. Cup the thumb into the other hand, scrub well and then dip clean into a basin soak for a full rinse.
People have always lived to 60, 70, 90, but the average life expectancy was not much more than half that number for most of history. And if you were 60 years old a hundred years ago, you were an OLD person. Today, people about that age feel as young as middle age.
There are two main reasons for this tremendous increase in productive years: cleanliness and year round fresh food. The second is easily attributable to the miracle of modern truck industry. The first is an extensive array of public health, laundry and personal hygiene practices made possible by modern industry. In all societies, longevity is clearly associated with cleanliness and personal hygiene.
Returning to our closed windows and heated air in the fall season, we are exposed to dust, molds and microbes in our dwellings after summer’s open ventilation. These immune system stressors are concentrated to produce the increase in disease, both acute and chronic, we see in the winter months.
Let’s review the basics. Beside good hand washing, facial dip lavage (see directions in ‘home remedies) and keeping our home and clothes clean, remember to use HOT water to wash bedding and underwear, keep the commode lid down and keep our tooth brush in a sealed container or outside the bathroom.
And leave all shoes at the door!
